A Quiet Easter 2006, lets keep it that way!
Both boats have been out 16 times already this year although we
did have an unusually quiet Easter with no “shouts”!
This was despite the harbour being very busy and when the bridge
lifted there was a steady flow of vessels passing through, we are
pleased to report that people stayed safe, long may it continue….
Coxswain Jonathan Clark would like to remind boat owners to check
their engines before putting to sea, he says “Just use some
common sense, as engine failure is one of the top reasons for our
lifeboats being launched at this time of year, a few simple checks
can make sure that those getting back on the water don’t become
one of our rescue statistics”.
Before you put your boat onto the water, just take a little time
to carry out some simple checks. Make sure the engine is serviced
after the winter break, check and update your engine spares such
as fuel filters, water pump impellers and drive belts. And ensure
you have the right tools on your boat so you can sort out any minor
problems for yourself. It’s also important to carry an alternative
means of propulsion; on a yacht that means sails, but on a motorboat
carry a spare engine and an anchor, and on a smaller vessel, a pair
of oars.
It is also important to tell people where you are going and when
you plan to return. Always wear a lifejacket when afloat and remember
the water is at its coldest at this time of year. Don’t forget
to check your VHF radio is working and that your mobile phone is
charged up. But remember the radio is the best option because everyone
on the water can hear your emergency call. And keep an eye on the
weather and tides.’
Remember these RNLI safety tips every time you venture out on the
water.
Check your engine and fuel
Tell others where you are going
Carry some means of calling for help
Keep an eye on weather and tides
