6th July

1631

At 4pm on July 6th a cyclist riding along Holes Bay came across these two boys who where stuck in the mud some 300 metres off the shore. The cyclist raised the alarm by contacting a RNLI employee on West Quay Road, who launched the Poole Inshore Lifeboat.

The two teenage boys were playing in the harbour at the rear of the Asda Supermarket in a 10ft Poole Canoe when it sunk. They got out of the boat and began to sink in the mud, they panicked and tried in vain to get back on the sunken boat but were stuck fast up to their knees and sinking further.

The ILB got as near as they could by boat then waded out to them, pulled them clear and bought them back to the safety of the shore.

They were extremely lucky, the tide was coming back in and they would have been in serious difficulties had no one spotted them and thought to call for help.
