MAYDAY IN POOLE HARBOUR

Both of the Poole Lifeboats were launched this evening @8pm to a “Mayday” in the harbour.

A Local Poole angling boat “Sharlin” was sinking fast. The 8 metre Starfish boat had collided with something near Aunty Betty Buoy which had caused the bow of the boat to cave in.

The stricken boat with two people onboard was taking on water fast, the lifeboats caught up with the boat at Diver buoy and immediately put the hoses onboard to halt the ingress of water. It took quiet a while to bring the water flow under control, the crew worked hard to block the hole with rags, cloths and anything to hand.

The boat was then towed to Salterns Marina who turned out a lifting crew especially to lift the debilitated boat out of the water. The pumps had to keep running until the boat was safely in the slings of the hoist; the bow was split and severely stoved in.

Coxswain Jonathan Clark said “having seen the vessel lifted out of the water at Salterns Marina and seeing the full extent of the damage, they were extremely lucky to keep the boat afloat.”
