Sunday 15th August

Both Boats were launched to a 36ft motor cruiser "Sheer Grace" on fire in Studland bay.

When the crews arrive the vessel was well alight, the two Crew who called "mayday" abandoned ship and had took refuge on a nearby yacht. The ILB took the shaken men ashore where the fire brigade had assembled.

The ALB arrived on scene and had its fire pump standing by ready to douse the boat but the fire by now was out of control it was decided by the fire service, who were observing, to be a hopeless case.

A decision was made that the ALB should tow the burning vessel out to deeper water and let her burn out.

It was burning quite fiercely and a tow rope was attached, the ALB towed the stricken shell of a boat out to deeper water and with the help of the fire hose sank her.
