Sunday 18th July
The ILB and ALB both went on passage at 12.30hrs
to Swanage bay to take part in the Swanage Lifeboat Open Day. Whilst
enroute the Inshore Lifeboat was tasked to a broken down vessel
in Swanage bay, the problem with the engine was located and rectified,
the engine was restarted and the motor boat made its own way back
to Poole.
At 1600hrs, on the way back from Swanage, the All
weather Lifeboat was literally in the right place just at the right
time!
They were on passage back from Swanage when they
sighted a vessel (sealine 360) halfway down the swash channel
near to the Training Bank, there was thick black smoke billowing
out and anxious people waving on deck.
The boat "Impulse" had five adults on
board was thick with acrid black smoke, Crewman Mike Hallard jumped
onboard, threw the gas bottles overboard, and the 5 people were
evacuated onto the Lifeboat.
In the meantime, other crew rigged the fire hoses
up and cooled the deck down. The problem was an over heated engine
and as the top of the engine was so hot, it had melted the plastic
cover which was dripping down onto the engine, smouldering and causing
the acrid smoke.
Once the engine was cooled down sufficiently and
the boat was made safe. A tow was attached and the stricken vessel
was towed back to Dolphin Haven.
The casualties were shaken but first aid wasn't
required.
