Thursday 17th June

The ILB and ALB launched at 15.27 and 15.40 to a report of 5 canoes with 7 children and 3 adults, that had got in difficulty and were washed ashore on Furzey Island.

The group had been camping on Long Island and were canoeing around the back of the harbour when the strong cold winds and fierce ebb tide had caught them out.

When the lifeboats reached the scene and assessed the situation they found that the children who were 15-16yrs old from Reading, had been in the water for some time and were extremely cold and exhausted, one 15yr old in particular had been in the water for over an hour and was very cold, a request for an ambulance was made.

The casualties were put on the ALB and transported back to Poole Yacht Club where an ambulance and paramedics were waiting to treat the youngsters.

The IlB towed the canoes back to long Island then returned to station.
