Friday 10th Oct

The All weather Lifeboat was launched Friday lunchtime to assist a 40 tonne Beam trawler “Sally Jane” who had put out a mayday after an engine room fire. “Sally Jane” was 1 ½ South East off Boscombe Pier. When the Lifeboat. Reached the trawler, the fire had been contained in the engine room, but the boat was disabled and had its fishing gear over the side.
The engine room and deck were still very hot, the lifeboat crew used the fire hose to cool the boat down, so that the fire would not reignite. The hatches were eventually opened and left to cool and then the thick black smoke cleared to reveal the damage. On inspection it was found that the main engine was not damaged and was able to restart, a separate small high-pressure pump had caused the fire, there also some oily rags nearby that caught alight and caused the acrid smoke.
After the fire had been contained the Lifeboat towed the stricken trawler back into Poole, she managed to restart her main engines and winch her fishing gear aboard and make her way back to Poole Quay escorted by the ALB.. “Sally Jane” is a Shoreham registered boat but often seen alongside Poole Quay.
