Rescue Activity

Rescue activity and launches from 2009

30 Dec
1330 The last call out of 2009 was to a 5m speedboat adrift 3 miles off Branksome Chine with nobody onboard. A fishing boat skipper had found the vessel and the skipper was concerned about whether there was anyone in the water. The ILB met up with the fishing vessel and checked for any signs that the speedboat had been recently occupied. The vessel had no engine and was full of leaves so the conclusion was made that the vessel had been abandoned and slipped its moorings. The ILB crew towed the speedboat to Dolphin Haven and then returned to station at 1430

28 Dec
1130 A 4m Dory had broken down off the ferry terminal with one person onboard. The ILB towed the vessel back to baiter before returning to station at 1230.

26 Dec
1920 On Boxing Day evening, an elderly man was reported to be in the water off the quay. The ILB launched and recovered the man and brought him back to the station where he was handed over to paramedics and taken to Poole Hospital. The crew returned to their Christmas festivities at 2030.

17 Dec
1920 A yacht was on passage from Chichester to Falmouth but due to the weather conditions was seeking shelter in Poole Harbour. Due to the lack of knowledge, charts and navigational aids, the skipper and three crew called for assistance ½ mile east of Ballard Down. Portland Coastguard tasked the inshore lifeboat to escort them into Poole Quay Boat Haven. The volunteer crew then returned to station at 2130 to join in with the crew’s Christmas party at the station.

0930 While the ALB was out on a training exercise with a tug, the tug skipper spotted a capsized R19 sailing vessel with persons in the water. The ALB took 2 minutes to get on scene, by which time the people in the water had been picked up by a RIB. The casualties, who were shaken and cold, were then passed onto the ALB and placed in the aft cabin with blankets. One of the casualties was given oxygen as a precaution. Read more on the story
The ALB was then tasked to a 9m dismated yacht off the ferry terminal with four persons onboard. The ILB arrived and helped to gather the sail and mast from the water before the vessel was then towed by the ALB, again to Poole Yacht Club.
The ILB was then retasked to a third incident to a dory that had engine failure. Once on scene, the ILB towed the vessel back to the slipway near the lifeboat college. Both lifeboats returned to station by 1400
29 Nov
0915 While on exercise, the ILB was requested to search for a possible person in the water at Alum Chine. The ILB carried out a close inshore search 1 nautical mile either side of Alum Chine and the ALB searched approx 2 cables
offshore parallel to the ILB. A windsurfer was sighted on the shoreline and once the coastguard rescue officers from the mobile unit arrived they confirmed that all was okay and the ILB returned to exercise.

Poole RNLI Lifeboats volunteer crew stretcher a man to safety through not so glorious mud.
Portland coastguard launched the Poole RNLI Inshore lifeboat to a report of a small speedboat seen capsized up in the Wareham Channel. The stricken vessel, a small dory had three men onboard, when it had got in to trouble. The inshore lifeboat swiftly arrived on scene it found that the men had left the partially submerged vessel and had managed to wade and scramble through the mud to a small beach. The back of the harbour can be treacherous it was a relief to see them all ashore. Read more about this difficult rescue here

13 Oct
2316 The ILB launched to reports of a person threatening to jump into the sea off Bournemouth Pier. On arrival the police were on the pier talking to the casualty and the ILB stood off at a distance so as not to alarm him. The crew were able to respond immediately when the casualty went into the water, quickly recovering the person and returning them to the shore into the safe arms of the police.

2 Oct
0619 Both boats launched to sightings of red flares off Brownsea Castle. The casualty was an 5.5m Dory with two people onboard. One of the crew had fallen overboard as he was trying to fix their outboard engine. The vessel was located in Brownsea Roads – the person had managed to get back onboard – and the ILB towed it back to Whitesides Quay. No medical attention was required.

26 Sep

13 Sep
1617 The ILB launched to a 10m Westerly yacht with one adult and four children onboard. The yacht had managed to get a mooring chain jammed around its propeller and went aground off Studland beach. The ILB pulled the vessel over by the mast and a crew member jumped into the shallow water to free the propeller. Then it was towed off the shoreline and escorted into Poole Harbour to check that they were not taking on any water.

12 Sep
1023 While out on an exercise the ILB was tasked to assist a yacht in difficulties at the No.5 buoy in the Swash Channel. The vessel was escorted to the harbour’s entrance.

Poole ALB launched to escort a dismasted trimaran into Poole Quay Boat Haven. The trimaran had been rescued by Swanage ALB after a possible collision with a trawler 14NM South of Anvil Point. Swanage ALB towed the vessel to Poole Harbour entrance where the trimaran was able to continue under her own power escorted by Poole Lifeboat.

1 Sep
1853 – The ILB launched following a report of two 999 calls reporting a capsized kayak. It was in fact a rowing skiff from Poole Rowing Club taking on water near Parkstone starting platform. The five women onboard were in the water for 30 minutes before a passing vessel saw them waving. The vessel took one of the girls who was distressed to Poole Quay Boat Haven where the alarm was raised. The ILB picked up the remaining crew and brought them back to the station to a waiting ambulance where they were checked over and were all okay. The ILB then returned to the submerged skiff and beached it at Baiter Slipway where members of the rowing club later retrieved it.

29 Aug
1200 – ILB launched to assist Swanage ALB with the rescue and recovery of the crew of one of the boats taking part in the Classic Cowes Torquay Cowes offshore race. It would seem that they had experienced a problem with their exhaust manifolds and before they were aware of the severity of the problem their craft had filled with too much water for their pump to cope with.
By the time Swanage ALB had arrived on scene the vessel was mostly submerged with only the last 4-5m of the bow remaining visible above the water’s surface. Luckily both of the crew had been recovered safely and uninjured by one of the event safety craft.
Once Swanage ALB had got the tow rigged they began a lengthy tow back towards Old Harry. Poole ILB arrived on scene with several more pumps so that they could come alongside to pump the boat dry. Unfortunately this didn't work so Swanage ALB decided to tow the vessel into shallow water where it was anchored safely for retrieval later. Poole ILB assisted with this before heading back off towards Poole.
27 Aug
Poole’s Inshore RNLI Lifeboat was launched to a report of “screams for help” at Salterns Marina. A member of public heard the cries of help earlier this evening and raised the alarm. Someone was in trouble.
The Inshore lifeboat was launched and soon arrived on scene to discover a jet skier in the water near Salterns Marina with his broken down jet ski. The jet skier had been in the water for over an hour when the ILB picked the casualty up. The volunteer crew checked the casualty over to make sure he was okay and then proceeded to Baiter Slipway with the casualty on board. The Jet skier had started out from Baiter with a friend, he then went off on his jet ski to get help and raise the alarm. The lifeboat crew and the casualty were hoping to find and meet up with his mate back at Baiter where their cars and trailers were parked.
When the Inshore lifeboat arrived back at Baiter his friend was not there and this caused some concern as he should have been back by now. The volunteer crew were unsure whether he had made it back to the shore his car was there but there was no sign of him or his jet ski. A decision was made to launch the all weather lifeboat and a search with the coastguards ensued. The mobile coastguard unit scoured the shore and both lifeboats began to search from the fuel barge down towards the entrance of the harbour. A thorough search followed, both the lifeboats combed the harbour then a call came through over the radio from the coastguards to say that the missing jet skier had turned up safe and well at Baiter. He had made it ashore at Blue Lagoon and had got a taxi to take him back to Baiter.
When it was certain everyone was safe and accounted for both boats returned back to station.

23 Aug
1400 - The pagers went off requesting both lifeboats to launch. The inshore lifeboat was tasked to a yacht between Boscombe and Bournemouth pier with a fouled propeller; an anchor chain had got it stuck, holding it fast. The crew of the inshore lifeboat managed to free the boat clear enabling it to go on its way.
The all-weather lifeboat then went to a report of a boat on fire off Branksome Chine. Arriving on scene, the speedboat with 3 people onboard was immediately evacuated. Volunteer crew boarded the boat, they disconnected the battery and turned the fuel off; the speedboat had suffered an electrical fire. When the crew had checked the boat thoroughly and felt it was safe a tow was attached. They took the boat back to Poole Quay where the inshore lifeboat picked up the tow and took the stricken vessel back to Cobbs Quay.
The RNLI all-weather lifeboat then went back down to the harbour and came across a lilo with two young girls on it perilously near the chain ferry. The girls had got swept by the wind and tide from the beach and were incredibly lucky that the lifeboat was passing as they were drifting. The lifeboat crew grabbed the girls and the lilo and took them back to their family in Shell Bay.
The Coastguard then asked the volunteer crew to standby as there were so many incidents going on and there were thousands of craft of all sizes out in the bay and harbour enjoying the air show and sunny weather.
The Coastguard then asked the RNLI Poole all-weather lifeboat to assist a broken down motorboat off Shore Road, but while en route they were reassigned to a speedboat that had broken down off Branksome Chine. The Poole inshore lifeboat attended the motorboat at Shore Road, which managed to restart his engine but it was stopping and starting when the lifeboat arrived. The inshore lifeboat escorted the spluttering motorboat back into the harbour.
Meanwhile the Poole all-weather lifeboat took the people off the broken down speedboat off Branksome Chine and started to tow the vessel back to Lake Road when another vessel flagged the lifeboat down. A small speedboat very close inshore with 3 people onboard had no steering and was being swept dangerously close to the shore, the all-weather lifeboat took the people off and attached another towline and then began towing two stricken vessels back, the latter to Baiter slipway. It was hard work manoeuvring and slaloming through a minefield of craft and towing the two boats against a very strong ebb tide.
Then a 999 report came through that a swimmer was being swept by the tide through the entrance of the harbour. Both lifeboats immediately headed to the area, with the stricken vessels under tow. Thankfully as they arrived on scene, they could see the swimmer being helped out of the water at the Haven hotel by the mobile coastguard unit. Then as the lifeboats entered the harbour they were waved down by a large RIB that had broken down and was being swept out of the entrance of the harbour on the strong dangerous ebb tide. The inshore lifeboat took it under control and attached a tow and they towed it back into the harbour to a safe mooring.
Meantime the all-weather lifeboat continued on towing the stricken vessels back to Baiter and Lake Road when they came across a boat aground off Blue Lagoon. The inshore lifeboat was sent to investigate, as the waters were extremely shallow. When they arrived on scene the occupants of the boat had jumped out and managed to push themselves clear and get back afloat. The inshore lifeboat escorted them back to deeper water. En route they took one of the stricken vessels from the all-weather lifeboat that wanted to go to Baiter slipway as it was a very low spring tide and the inshore lifeboat was the only vessel that could get near the shore. The boat that had gone aground at the Blue Lagoon followed them in. The all-weather lifeboat continued onto Lake Road and the inshore lifeboat was on the way to meet them when they came across the Maritime Volunteer Service launch aground behind the truck line. The inshore lifeboat pulled them clear.
Having helped the last broken boat get back on its trailer and safely on its way home both Poole lifeboats headed back to the station. After refuelling and washing down the boats they went home for a well-deserved rest at about 8pm.
The RNLI Poole lifeboats attended to over 30 incidents during the air show.

22 Aug
Both Lifeboats were asked to help a 22ft powerboat with 3 people on board that had suffered a overheated engine. A tow was attached and the boat was brought back to the safety of the Dolphin Quay marina.

22 Aug
The lifeboats tasked onto a broken down speedboat. When the lifeboat arrive on scene the speedboat had managed to restart and was happy to continue on its way.

22 Aug
All weather lifeboat tasked by Portland coastguard to assist a wind surfer who was in difficulty at the harbour entrance. The Wind surfer had got into trouble but had been helped by the harbour launch when the lifeboats arrived on scene.

22 Aug
The Inshore lifeboat was then tasked to a boat aground on the notorious Hooks Sands just outside the harbour entrance. The boat with one person onboard was high and dry on the shifting sand bank. The inshore volunteer lifeboat crew checked that the person onboard was okay and that he was happy to sit it out till the tide came back in a couple of hours time when he could float off in his own time. He was happy to stay there and watch the planes.

22 Aug
Both lifeboats responded to a report of a boat on fire being towed back by another pleasure craft. The Inshore lifeboat arrived on scene to find the vessels at the entrance of the harbour. The crew immediately evacuated the vessel that had 6 people on board. A volunteer crewman jumped onboard the boat to check it out. The crew had used a fire extinguisher to put the initial fire out. An electrical fire had occurred inside a compartment behind the fuel tank. The compartment area still felt extremely hot so the crewman threw buckets of water on the area to cool it down. The Lifeboats then towed the stricken vessel to the Royal Motors Yacht club where the fire brigade was standing by. The fire brigade checked the boat out with their thermal imaging equipment until they were happy that the boat was no longer at risk and had cooled down sufficiently.

21 Aug
1424 – ILB launched to a 5m Boston Whaler that was under tow by Mudeford inshore lifeboat. Poole ILB took over the tow at the harbour’s entrance and towed it to Baiter slipway.
The ILB was then retasked to a report of a speedboat in difficulties off Flag Head Chine. On scene the vessel was within the surfline. ILB put 1 crew member in the water with a towline, which was then attached to the bow of the casualty and towed out of the surf. Casualty taken to Davis's Boatyard before returning to station.

20 Aug
Once more Poole RNLI lifeboats were in much demand this evening. There was a “roar on the shore” with an armada of vessels out at sea in Poole bay to watch the spectacular firework display.
The Inshore lifeboat was launched in the afternoon to a yacht that had gone aground in the Wareham channel. When they arrived on scene a tow was attached and the yacht was pulled free.
Three hours later, both lifeboats were tasked by Portland coastguard at around teatime to a report of a powerboat with a hole in its hull taking on water. The stricken vessel was west of Bournemouth with two people onboard.
The Inshore volunteer crew boarded the vessel and plugged the hole, using pumps that we carry on the lifeboats, the crew sprung in to action and pumped the water out, then a tow was attached and the stricken vessel was taken to Dorset Lake yard where it was lifted out of the water for closer inspection.
The All weather lifeboat was in demand again when Portland coastguard launched the lifeboat to help a small cabin cruiser that had its window broken and was taking in water off Alum Chime. The Lifeboat found the vessel near the entrance of the harbour baling out. The Lifeboat escorted the boat back to Hamworthy.
Next, the inshore lifeboat was tasked to a PAN PAN call over the radio from a vessel that had fouled its propellor on a lobster pot towards Bournemouth.
The All weather lifeboat was sent to assist a 25ft motorboat that was drifting dangerously near to the treacherous rocks known as the Trading bank, which is just outside the entrance of the harbour. The volunteer crew located the vessel and attached a tow and brought the boat with 3 people onboard back to the safety of Poole Quay. In the meantime the inshore lifeboat took their stricken vessel back to the Dolphin Haven.
The lifeboats and crew went back to the station fuelled up and hosed the boats down, ready to standby for when they are needed again. The volunteer crew returned home late after midnight exhausted. Coxswain Jon Clark said, “There was hundreds of boats out their tonight as far as you could see there was navigation lights, thankfully we were there to help people”.

Poole RNLI Lifeboats busy afternoon take “Shout” tally over 100 for 2009. Portland coastguard launched the All weather lifeboat The City of Sheffield earlier today tasking it to assist a broken down Bayliner with nine people on board. The stricken vessel was off Old Harry rocks when it had encountered gearbox failure. The boat had five children and four adults on board.
The All weather lifeboat (ALB) was on route when it came across a yacht with a woman on the deck who had seriously injured her hand. Two of the volunteer crew boarded the yacht to administer first aid. The woman had torn the ligaments in her hand whilst working the ropes on the yacht. The ALB asked for the ILB to launch to help out. They then made their way to the Bayliner and took the nine people, children and adults off and a tow was attached. A volunteer crewman boarded the boat and they began to tow it back to the station and then through the bridge on to Cobbs Quay. The ILB took over the tow and the ALB returned to the yacht with the injured woman on to pick her and the crew up. They took the woman to an awaiting ambulance at North Haven steps; the ambulance took the casualty to Poole hospital for further treatment.
The ILB returned to station after successfully towing the Bayliner back. It was then assigned to help a small boat with engine failure off pottery pier. They took the broken down boat to its mooring. Both boats returned to station hoping for a quiet evening having been out three days and one night in a row !

The Inshore lifeboat was launched by Portland coastguard to a report of four people in the water at Bull pit beacon that is down under evening hill. Arriving on scene the volunteer crew found a capsized dinghy with two people clinging onto the hull of the upturned vessel. A passing vessel “Vigilant” the harbour launch had picked up the other two people. The family of four were down in Poole on a day out when their dinghy got into difficulties.
The volunteer crew assisted the two people in the water, they were extremely cold and the crew checked them and the other members of the family to make sure they were okay. The crew reunited the family on the “Vigilant” who took them ashore to Salterns Marina. The lifeboat crew then re-righted the dinghy and towed it back to the Marina. Volunteer senior helmsman Paul Singleton said “It was blustery out in the harbour, the family were glad to be out of the water.”

19 July
Both RNLI Poole lifeboats were launched to assist two vessels aground earlier today. An 18ft yacht with one man and his dog went aground off Lake Pier as the tide was on the ebb. A passing 40ft motorboat with four people on board went to assist the stricken vessel. They then got in to trouble themselves.
They got a rope around their propeller whilst trying to tow the yacht off and ended up running aground alongside.
The Inshore lifeboat arrived on scene and the volunteer crew ran the big tow rope from the all weather lifeboat across to the motorboat. The big boat then towed the motorboat free; this then gave the Inshore lifeboat (ILB) the room to manoeuvre. They went in and secured a tow to the yacht and pulled it free. The yachts mooring was nearby at Lake Pier so the inshore lifeboat took the yacht back.
The all weather lifeboat proceeded to Salterns marina with the Motorboat undertow as its propeller was fouled and it had damaged its drives.
The conditions out in the harbour were choppy.
Volunteer Coxswain Jonathan Clark said, “There was a gale of wind from the South West, it wasn’t nice out there today.”
Both boats then returned back to station.

A hectic evening for Poole RNLI Lifeboats
1600 The Inshore lifeboat (ILB) was launched to a report of an ill person on a yacht coming into Poole. They met the yacht at the harbour entrance where two crewmen went onboard to assist. The ILB then went to pick up ambulance crew from the Haven as the man was quite poorly. The all weather boat was launched to standby. The all weather lifeboat escorted the yacht to Dolphin Haven where the man was transferred to a waiting ambulance and taken immediately to Poole hospital.
The all weather lifeboat was then tasked to a broken down speed boat in the bay. The boat had two people on board who had been taken off by a passing yacht. The lifeboat picked up the two people from the yacht and went to recover the speedboat which had broken down with its anchor stuck in the bottom of the sea bed. When the lifeboat arrived on scene it put two crewmen onboard the speedboat to free the anchor as it was a hazard. They successfully freed the boat and a tow was attached to take the stricken vessel to Dolphin Haven.
As soon as they let go of the speed boat and safely put the two men ashore the all weather lifeboat was then asked by Portland coastguard to go the aid of a broken down jet skier in difficulty off Poole bar buoy. The dive boat “Beowulf” was passing and had picked the jet skier by the time the lifeboat arrived on scene and had started to tow the jet ski back to into Poole.
The lifeboat took over the tow of the casualty and started to make their way to Baiter when a passing yacht shouted across that there was a windsurfer in difficulty. The lifeboat went alongside the exhausted windsurfer who had broken his rig, they picked him and his board up making sure he was okay. The ILB came alongside and took the windsurfer back to Whitely lake and the all weather lifeboat took the jet skier back to Baiter.
Both boats returned to station just after 8.30pm, the crew hoped that their teas weren’t in the dustbin! Volunteer Coxswain Jon Clark said, “ It doesn’t matter what happens or how long we are out there, we are always happy to help”

Boat trip ends in Trauma
RNLI Poole Lifeboats launched to a serious spinal injury off Bournemouth Pier.
Portland Coastguard launched the Poole lifeboats to a small sports boat to the west of Bournemouth Pier where a man in his thirties lay on the deck with a serious back injury. The man had been out on the boat with four other people when they hit a rogue wave, landing the boat awkwardly and injuring the man onboard.
When the lifeboats arrived on scene the man was in excruciating pain, the crew immobilised the man and administered entinox to ease the pain. Using a collar and a spinal board the crew gingerly transferred the casualty off the small sports boat onto the all weather lifeboat. The crew took the casualty ashore to an awaiting ambulance standing by at Bournemouth pier. The ambulance then took the casualty to Poole hospital for specialist treatment. Both boats returned to the station.

The inshore lifeboat crew were tasked (from the previous shout just before midnight on 6 June) after concerned relatives reported two men missing on a fishing trip. The all-weather lifeboat also launched to join the search. The inshore crew found the motorboat at Whitley Lake where its crew had moored after losing radio and mobile phone contact in the storm.

6 June
After a day of being the centre of attention at the naming ceremony and dedication, it was business as usual when the pagers went off just before midnight. Sgt Bob Martin launched amid lightning and heavy rain, which felt like ‘ball bearings being fired from a machine gun’ and force 6 easterly winds after a call from Portland Coastguard just before midnight on Saturday.
Reports of a man in the water saw the crew dash to the fuel barge in Poole Harbour where the man had managed to climb back onboard.

The yachtsman then dropped his anchor down but with the lumpy seas and blustery winds, he found his yacht was being dragged perilously near towards the shore.
The Poole lifeboat and volunteer crew found the yacht and attached a tow to bring him safely back to his mooring inside Poole harbour. Volunteer Coxswain Jonathan Clark said: ‘He was glad to see us; there was some bumpy sea out there. When you're out there on days like today you soon have enough.’

21 January
1617 With the wind force increasing, and heavy rain just starting, the all-weather lifeboat was launched to meet Swanage lifeboat, which was escorting an Army landing craft (en route from Marchwood Military Port to Portland) that was taking on water. The bow loading ramp had failed in the breaking waves off St Albans Head and the crew onboard had sent out a Mayday.
Both the Swanage lifeboats, the Coastguard helicopter from Portland and the Lulworth firing range safety boat were initially tasked to assist. The helicopter was first on scene and took two crew off the landing craft, leaving one aboard. The range safety boat then took the landing craft in tow back towards Swanage with the Swanage lifeboats escorting. Swanage all-weather lifeboat's salvage pump was passed across and three crew members went onboard to assist pumping the water out. At one stage the water ingress was so great that they diverted to beach the landing craft in Swanage Bay.
However, engineers from Warship Sutherland, which was also in the area, were able to make temporary repairs to the bow ramp. Once this was done the landing craft's Coxswain was happy to head to Poole under his own power. Swanage lifeboat escorted them down the Swash Channel where Poole all-weather lifeboat took over the escort duties. The Coxswain of the landing craft was unfamiliar with Poole Harbour so two of Poole ALB’s crew went onboard with a salvage pump, taking over from the three Swanage crew and replacing their pump. Swanage lifeboats were then released to return to station.
By now it was dark and raining heavily but Poole lifeboat escorted the landing craft up the main channel, making 7–8 knots, and into the Royal Marines camp in Poole Harbour where the Marines were able to tie the craft up alongside.
Once the crew and pump were back onboard the ALB the lifeboat then returned to station at 1810, just in time for an exercise with a reporter from Wave 105 onboard to record some interviews for transmission on 30 January, the RNLI’s SOS day. Keep an ear out!

17 January
1626 In strong breezy conditions, the inshore lifeboat was called out to a report of a kite that was separated from a kitesurfer and the first informant was unsure whether the kitesurfer was safe.
Initially the lifeboat and crew made their way towards Shore Road on the inside of the harbour at Whitley Lake but the Coastguard then informed them that the incident was occurring on the seaward side of Shore Road. The crew started to search close inshore and were quickly able to see two kitesurfers walking along the beach near Jazz’s café.
Poole Coastguard mobile then arrived on scene and the coastguard rescue officers were able to check that one of them was the person whose kite was reported in trouble.
Once the lifeboat crew were sure that the kitesurfer was safe they were able to return to station.

17 January
1807 The wind had picked up and when the pagers sounded for the second time on Saturday there was a gale force wind blowing with gusts up to severe gale force 9. Initially the inshore lifeboat launched to a report of two people stuck in the water near Lake Pier. It soon became evident that the sea conditions were rough with a 1m swell and the ILB requested the launch of the all-weather lifeboat to assist with the search.
As time progressed it became obvious that three people had been out kayaking and had capsized. One of the kayakers had made it ashore and called for an ambulance but it was unsure whether the other two were also ashore. While one of the ILB crew members was ashore at the Marines base finding out more information, the Coastguard requested Rescue helicopter 106 (that had just finished another task at Lyme Bay) to assist with the search.
After a short time the two lifeboat crews were informed that the other two kayakers were safe ashore but one of the kayaks was still missing. The helicopter was stood down but the two lifeboats continued to search for the missing kayak. This was soon located close to shore under the water and another ILB crew member was able to drag it up the beach.
The two lifeboats were then able to return to station just over an hour after the initial launch in worsening conditions.

12 January
1353 In rain and gale force winds, both lifeboats were launched to a report of a windsurfer missing between Canford Cliffs and Bournemouth Pier. The inshore lifeboat conducted a search close inshore while the all-weather lifeboat searched 200m further out covering a distance of 1 mile. Nothing was found and so the Coastguard released both boats to return to station. It was classed as a call with good intent. Both lifeboats returned to station and were ready for service by 1530.

11 January
1635 As it was just getting dark, the pagers sounded for the first call out of 2009. The Police had called the Coastguard to report that a fully clothed man had walked out at low tide into the middle of Parkstone Bay. The inshore lifeboat crew located him waist deep in water and managed to haul him into the boat. They returned him to Parkstone Bay Marina where they handed him over to ambulance and police crews. The lifeboat returned to station at 1730.
