Both boats arrived on scene at 20.30 at this stage it was uncertain how many people where in the car. A major sea search was undertaken. Search and rescue helicopters “Whiskey Bravo” and “India Juliet” were on scene searching from the air. Alongside our lifeboats there were three police boats, a pilot boat and a dredger who was working in the area. On the land there were also mobile coastguards units.
Our ALB was tasked to be on “scene commander” this meant that all the search boats were coordinated by the ALB.
Just after 21.00hrs a patch of oil was spotted in the water and a woman was found close to the “Hook Sands” by “Whiskey Bravo”. A winchman recovered the casualty from the water and she was taken to Whitecliff where an ambulance was standing by who transferred the casualty to Poole hospital.
It remained impossible to ascertain how many people were in the car so the searches intensified adding both Swanage lifeboats to the team.
The search continued into the early hours, until the authorities could confidently state that there was only one occupant in the vehicle after a positive identification of the casualty. This enabled Portland Coastguard to terminate the search. Both Lifeboats returned to station at around 3am.
