A large crowd enjoyed the annual Blue Boar bath race, New
Year's Day 2010. Poole RNLI Lifeboat crews take an early bath !
Poole lifeboat crew joined in the fun at the annual New
Years day Blue Boar Bath tub race in Poole Quay.
Over 20 “bathtubs” took to the water on a very
cold, bright bracing day. The race has been held regularly for many years
and is a certain cure for any hangovers.
The vessels course is from Fish shambles steps along down
the quay to the Custom House steps. The vessels have to be constructed
with a bathtub and propelled by single ended paddles.
The all weather lifeboat and inshore lifeboat patrolled
the quay to tow any stranglers and keep the competitors in order.
The landlady from the Blue boar and Poole lifeboat station
Mechanic Paul Taylor started the race off, some of the “serious”
craft pelted off down the quay, others had a free for all, splashing around,
whilst some just went round in circles…
The crowds on the quay enjoyed the spectacle and well humoured
antics
Volunteer Coxswain Jonathan Clark said “Its been brilliant,
it’s the most baths and crowds I have seen on the quay for many
years. Our crew that entered did not get very far, but they had fun and
that’s what its about.” Volunteer crew have all been on standby
through out the Christmas and New Year period There was three callouts
over the festive season all attended by the Inshore lifeboat, the first
was to help a person who went into the quay and then to assist two broken
down vessels. Volunteer Coxswain Jonathan Clark said, “It’s
business as usual, over the holiday period, you just get on and do it.
You never know when someone may need our help”.
