Station open day raises a record £2500!

Once more the weather was kind and hundreds of people came along to the lifeboat station for our open day and a fabulous time was had by all!

We were honoured to have Christian Kosiol (all the way from Hanover, Germany) and his model lifeboats; he also surprised us with a model of our Atlantic 75 lifeboat. Visitors watched in awe as he put them through their paces.

We had various demonstration rescues throughout the day with help from our ‘stunt’ team re-enacting drunks in trouble, a boat on fire, divers in difficulties, and a capsized canoeist.

We also had a demonstration of a capsized D class, which took a lot of strength and skill; and a flare display – and we’re not talking trousers! Brave volunteers stood like the Statue of Liberty and, with help from our expert, showed the rest of the public the various flares and how to use them correctly.

In the boathouse we had a first aid display and Pete, our paramedic, checked people’s blood pressures alongside Resusci Anne. RNLI lifeguards and sea safety also came along to instil the important safety messages.

There were jugglers, side stalls, a balloon race and lots of fun and games.

At the end of the day the crew were made to walk the plank! And one of them actually broke the plank – say no more!

It was a hugely successful day and we are extremely grateful for all the support to raise over £2,500 – a record amount!

And the boats didn’t get called out on a shout.
