ASK the Coxswain ?

This is class 7-1 from the Secondary School in Dorf Mecklenburg which asked the Poole lifeboat crew some searching questions as part of their English lesson. The answers are below...

1. How do you feel as a lifeboat man/woman?

I feel very proud, I am doing something worthwhile and being on the crew,
is like having an extended family.

2. How often are you on duty?

24hrs a day 7 days a week

3. How many boats have you got?

We have 2 boats at Poole lifeboat Station the all weather Tyne class lifeboat "The City of Sheffield" which I drive and an Atlantic 75 an Inshore lifeboat.

4. What does your family say to your dangerous job?

My 3 year old son is very proud of the fact that his daddy drives the lifeboat ! My wife worries when I go out in the middle of the night when
the weather is bad but she knows that I am a professional and the best person to be in that situation, she is also involved at the station ,she is the press officer so does the reports to the newspapers, TV and radio stations. My mum ! is very proud when I save someone's life. And my dad is proud too as I have followed in his footsteps, he was 2nd coxswain at Poole
Lifeboat station.

5. Do you find it boring to wait for something to happen while you are
on duty?

No because I am a "retained" coxswain this means that I have a full time job and I am a volunteer like the rest of the crew accept for James who is the station full time mechanic. James is at the station all the time but he
does not get bored as there is plenty to do with maintaining the boats and looking after the station.

6. How long do you have to train to be a lifeboat man or woman?

The training is endless, when you join the crew you have to complete a probationary year and then go before a crew vote. Training is ongoing we do exercises on both boats every week. I have been on the crew for over 20 years and I am still training!

7. Are you scared when there is a very difficult rescue?

No, because the adrenalin kicks in, you do not have time to be scared.

8. Are you sometimes angry when people do stupid things out on sea?

No, not angry but sometimes a little frustrated or annoyed when silly unavoidable things happen.

9. Is there anybody still in your crew who won a medal? Will we be able to talk to him or her?

No, we have no people on the crew still that have been awarded a medal, but we have been awarded a vellum, which is a letter of thanks for the Chain Ferry rescue service as follows...
