The crew at Poole lifeboat station

The present crew

rb

Crew: Rod Brown

Role: Lifeboat Operations Manager (LOM)
Facts: Sailmaker

Rod is our Lifeboat Operations Manager and his wife Carole has been our station Treasurer since 2001. He runs Quay Sails in Poole and the station values and relies on his experience. He is not available during boatshows, when he can be found in the Guinness tent doing lots of business! He is a member of Poole Yacht Club and a keen sailor.

Crew: Rod Jenkins

Role: Deputy Launching Authority (DLA)
Facts: Marine Civil Engineering Contractor

Rod is well known in Poole for his company Jenkins Marine. He used to be a local fisherman and then went into marine engineering so he knows the harbour well. The crew looks forward to having a shout when Rod is duty DLA as he always provides doughnuts for the crew. He made the mistake of doing it once!

Crew: Liam McKenna

Role: Deputy Launching Authority (DLA)
Facts: Principal Refit Manager at RNLI Headquarters

Liam has been with the Institution for 14 years but before this he was seen cruising around the Med and on the west coast of Scotland where he was a charter skipper/ops manager. He trained as a marine engineer, worked on fishing trawlers and coasters, but the last time he got his hands dirty was about 20 years ago. His friends and family call him Big Fish, whether to do with his size or the fact that he has spent most of his life in or on the water, we don't know. Or maybe he just drinks like one!

Crew: Geoff Barfoot

Role: Deputy Launching Authority
Joined: 1987
Facts: Ironmonger

Geoff is the CE of Boone's, a very fine ironmonger’s store in Poole High Street. He was a crew member for just over 20 years until he decided to hang up his pager full time. He has however kept his pager and become our newest deputy launching authority. He is a dab hand at organising our crew barbeques and he makes a mean paella!

Crew: Pete Probut

Role: Deputy Launching Authority (DLA)
Facts: Plumber/Fisherman

Crew: Watchman

Role: Mascot
Joined: 1990
Facts: Always on duty!

The watchman is a handsome gnome made by a few of the retired crew. He sits on a steel pile and his job is to watch over the lifeboats. He once fell overboard after a passing boat's wash dislodged him and he was lost at sea for a while. Then Steve ‘X’ (an ‘ex’ crew member) volunteered to rescue him. Steve donned his diving suit and retrieved him from the murky depths. After a fresh lick of paint he was put back in position. He sits, quite contented, keeping an eye over both the boats in all weathers.
